Drive to Jageshwar (Approx. 5 hours drive)
Sightseeing (time permitting): (Approx. 2-3 hours)
- Chitai Golu Devta Temple: A revered shrine dedicated to Golu Devta, a local deity believed to fulfill wishes. The temple has hundreds of bells hung by devotees seeking blessings.
- Kainchi Dham: A spiritual retreat and an ashram established by Neem Karoli Baba, one of the most famous saints of the region.
Overnight stay in Jageshwar.
The temples of Jageshwar exhibit a fascinating blend of ancient Kumaoni architecture and Shikhara-style design, characterized by tall spires and intricate stone carvings. Some of the temples date back to the 9th-10th century AD, with many being built in Nagara style (North Indian temple architecture). The stone carvings and sculptures found at the temples represent mythological scenes and deities, reflecting the rich cultural and artistic traditions of the region. The temples are made of stone, with ornate carvings of gods, goddesses, and animals, offering an interesting glimpse into the artistic history of Kumaon. Deodar forests surround the temples, creating a peaceful ambiance, ideal for worship and meditation.
Key Temples and Sites to Visit in Jageshwar
- Pradhana Shiva Temple: This is the primary temple of the Jageshwar complex, dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is considered the holiest shrine here and is often the focal point of pilgrimages.
- Dandeshwar Temple: Another significant Shiva temple, known for its large collection of lingams (stone representations of Lord Shiva).
- Chandi Devi Temple: A temple dedicated to Goddess Chandi, located near the Jageshwar complex.
- Jageshwar Forest: Surrounding the temple complex is a dense forest of deodar (cedar) trees, which adds to the sacred atmosphere of the region. It is said that these forests have been a source of divine energy and provide a peaceful setting for meditation.
Drive to Pithoragarh (Approx. 6 hours drive)
Pithoragarh, situated in the heart of the Kumaon region, is often referred to as the “Little Kashmir” due to its scenic beauty. It is an important stop before heading towards the higher reaches of the Himalayas. Overnight stay in Pithoragarh.
Drive to Dharchula (Approx. 3-4 hours)
Dharchula is a small town located on the banks of the Kali River, close to the Indo-Nepal-Tibet border. It is a base for trekking to Adi Kailash and Om Parvat.
From Dharchula, proceed towards Nabi or Gunji (Approx. 4-5 hours drive), two small hamlets where you’ll be staying overnight. Both these places are near the Tibetan border and are relatively remote. Overnight stay in Nabi/Gunji.
Early morning departure to Jeolingkong. The drive takes around 4 hours one way, at times varies depending upon road conditions. There is a small trek of around 2-3kms to Gauri Kund and Paravti Sarovar from Jeolingkong towards Adi Kailash that offers the best view of the mountain and a chance to see its magical reflection on the lake.
Adi Kailash (also known as Chhota Kailash) is considered the mini version of Mount Kailash, the most sacred mountain in Hindu mythology. The route to Adi Kailash is challenging but rewarding, and it is believed that Lord Shiva meditated here in ancient times.
After spending some time at Adi Kailash, return to Nabi/Gunji. Overnight stay in Nabi/Gunji.
Drive to Nabidhang, another 3-4 hour journey from the village in a different border road that further leads to Lipulekh Pass. We drive to Nabidhang, from where you get to see the perfect view of Om Parvat, a mountain that naturally forms the sacred symbol of Om on its snow-covered slopes. It is a highly revered site in Hinduism, symbolizing the universe and divine presence.
The shape of the Om symbol becomes visible, especially nearing the winter season and early spring months, when snow outlines the mountain in this distinctive pattern. After seeking the blessings of the divine inscription, we drive back to Nabi & Gunji after lunch.
Return to Nabi/Gunji after the visit. Overnight stay in Nabi/Gunji.
Drive to Narayan Ashram (Approx. 3-4 hours)
