Panchang & Sankranti

Understanding the Hindu Calendar

The Hindu calendar (Panchang) is lunisolar: months follow the moon, while the year is kept in step with the sun. That is why Diwali or Holi move by up to three weeks from year to year. In the hills, the most important folk festivals are instead tied to the Sankranti, the day the sun enters a new zodiac sign. This is why Harela, Phool Dei and Ghughutiya fall on almost the same date every year.

  • Vikram SamvatThe Hindu era used in North India. The year starts on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada (March–April) and is 56–57 years ahead of the Gregorian year.
  • TithiA lunar day. Each month has 30 tithis, and most festivals are fixed by tithi, such as Janmashtami on Ashtami.
  • PakshaA fortnight: Shukla (waxing moon, ending on Purnima) and Krishna (waning moon, ending on Amavasya).
  • SankrantiThe sun’s entry into a new rashi, beginning a solar month. Kumaon’s months (Chait, Baisakh, Jeth…) start on the Sankranti.
