It lies at roughly 1,090 metres above sea level, in the lower river valleys belt of Kumaon. As the crow flies it is about 43 km from Haldwani and 17 km from Champawat, the district headquarters. About Champawat district
Champawat was the first capital of the Chand dynasty and is known for the Baleshwar temple, the hill town of Lohaghat, Abbott Mount and the Devidhura Bagwal at Maa Barahi temple on Raksha Bandhan. Purnagiri temple near Tanakpur draws large crowds in spring.
